What is the Energy Recovery Facility (ERF)?

The Buttington Quarry ERF is a modern state-of-the-art facility that will recover energy from residual waste that arises in Powys and surrounding areas, thereby diverting it away from landfill. The Energy Recovery Facility has been designed to generate around 13-megawatts of low carbon and renewable energy through the thermal treatment of up to 167,000 tonnes per year of non-hazardous, non-recyclable, household, residual, commercial and industrial waste.

The ERF would be an efficient, environmentally responsible and deliverable solution for non-recyclable waste. It would play an important role in an overall waste strategy which aims to reduce the amount of waste produced, recycle as much as possible and put any remaining waste to good use.
