What is the Energy Recovery Facility (ERF)?
The Buttington Quarry ERF is a modern state-of-the-art facility that will dispose of residual municipal waste that arises in Powys and surrounding areas, thereby diverting it away from landfill and producing an equivalent amount of electricity for around 8,000 homes. It will also supply heat created during the process to local industry.
The ERF would play an important role in disposing of the county’s non-recycled residual waste by processing it under controlled conditions to provide an important source of energy in the form of electricity and heat. A valuable means of helping the Council avoid high landfill taxes, the ERF would also contribute to reducing dependency on fossil fuels to generate our electricity and help overcome the looming energy gap.
The ERF would represent an efficient, environmentally responsible and deliverable solution to non-recyclable waste. It would play an important role in an overall waste strategy which aims to reduce the amount of waste produced, recycle as much as possible and put any remaining waste to good use.
